James Weddell was a Master in the Royal Navy, which is the United Kingdom's navy. He was also a sealing captain. This means he sailed ships to hunt seals for their fur and oil. In 1823, James Weddell visited South Georgia. Because of his important visits and explorations in the area, this glacier was named in his honor.
