The Bond Store is a really old and important building in Wellington, New Zealand. You can find it on Jervois Quay, right by the water. Today, this cool building is home to the Wellington Museum, where you can learn all about the city's history!

History of the Bond Store

This building was ordered in 1890 by the Wellington Harbour Board. The Harbour Board was a group that managed the port and shipping in Wellington. They needed a new, strong building to replace older wooden ones from the 1860s.

The famous architect Frederick de Jersey Clere designed the building. He used a style called French Second Empire. This style was popular in the late 1800s. It often features tall, grand buildings with fancy details. The building was finished and ready to use in 1892.

Who Owned the Building?

For a long time, the Wellington Harbour Board owned the building. But in 1989, things changed for local groups in New Zealand. The Harbour Board's business jobs were moved to a new company called Centreport. This company is owned by the Regional Council.

Some of the Harbour Board's other properties, like this building, were given to the Wellington City Council. This means the city council became the new owner.

The Bond Store Today

Today, the building is known simply as the Bond Store. It's considered a very special historic place. Heritage New Zealand has given it a "Category 1" rating. This means it's a place with "special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value." It's a building that tells an important story about Wellington's past.
