A Look Back at Wellsford
Wellsford has an interesting past. It had its own post office for many years, starting in the 1880s and closing in 1955.
Wellsford's Journey as a Town
Long ago, Wellsford was actually an "incorporated city." This means it had its own official local government. It became a city sometime in the 1910s. In 1920, about 140 people lived there. However, over the years, fewer and fewer people lived in Wellsford. By 1970, only 9 people called it home. Because of the small population, Wellsford stopped being an official city in 1975. This process is called "disincorporation."
Wellsford was the last town in Kansas to disincorporate for a long time. That changed when Treece disincorporated in 2012.
What You Can See Today
Even though it's no longer an official city, Wellsford still has some cool things to see. You can find a church there. There's also a historic one-room jailhouse that dates back to the late 1800s!
