The Story of Wendel
The community of Wendel got its name from Thomas Moran. He was the president of a railroad company called the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway. Moran named the place after one of his friends.
Wendel had its own post office for many years. It first opened in 1915. Before that, the post office was in a nearby place called Purser. The Wendel post office closed for a short time in 1920 but then reopened in 1921.
Wendel's Railroad Past
For a long time, Wendel was an important stop for the railroad. It was a "crew change point," meaning train workers would stop there. The community had housing, hotels, and other services for these workers.
Most of the buildings and structures related to the railroad were taken down in 1996. The railroad tracks in the area are now abandoned, meaning trains no longer use them. Even though the railroad is gone, a few homes can still be found in Wendel today.
