The Story of Wendy's Milk Bar
How Wendy's Started
Wendy's began as an ice cream shop in Adelaide, South Australia. It was founded on July 31, 1979. Four friends, Bruce Koehne, John Hill, Geoff Davis, and Phil Rogers, started it. From just one shop, Wendy's grew very quickly. It became a large group of over 200 ice cream stores. These stores are found across Australia and New Zealand. In 2014, a company from Singapore took over the main rights for the chain.
Changes in New Zealand
In late 2018, many Wendy's Supa Sundaes shops in New Zealand changed their names. They became "Shake Shed & Co." This happened because of a disagreement. The Australian Wendy's office wanted to use an Australian ice cream supplier. However, the New Zealand shops preferred suppliers from New Zealand.
A court in New Zealand later decided that the Shake Shed & Co. stores had to close. By 2020, the company faced financial problems and stopped operating.
Rebranding and New Focus
Around the same time, Wendy's Supa Sundaes changed its name. It became "Wendy's Milk Bar." This change helped the brand focus more on being a traditional milk bar. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, many Wendy's restaurants changed how they served customers. They focused on take-away service. This meant people could pick up their orders to eat at home.
