Wendy C. Brawley is an American politician who served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. She represented the 70th District from 2017 until 2022. Wendy Brawley is a member of the Democratic Party. In 2022, she was not re-elected, losing to fellow Democrat Jermaine Johnson in the primary election.

Wendy Brawley's Political Journey

Wendy Brawley has been involved in politics for several years. As a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, she helped make laws for her state.

Important Actions in Office

In January 2020, Wendy Brawley supported Senator Elizabeth Warren for President of the United States. This is a common way for politicians to show who they think should lead the country.

A big achievement for Wendy Brawley was in May 2022. She helped create a new law that stopped schools from sending unpaid lunch money bills to special companies that collect debts. This law was very popular and was approved by everyone in both the South Carolina House and Senate. This meant that families would not be bothered by debt collectors for school lunch money.

Elections and Public Service

Wendy Brawley ran in several elections to serve the people of South Carolina.

Running for the State Senate

In 2016, Wendy Brawley tried to become a member of the South Carolina Senate for the 21st district. She ran in the Democratic primary election but did not win. The person who was already in office, Darrell Jackson, won that election.

Becoming a State Representative

In 2017, a special election was held for the South Carolina House of Representatives. This happened because the previous representative, Joseph Neal, passed away. Wendy Brawley ran for this open seat in District 70.

She won the first round of the Democratic primary election. However, she needed more than half of the votes to win outright. Because she didn't get 50% of the votes, she had to go to a second round, called a runoff election. In the runoff, Wendy Brawley won against H. Heath Hill. This meant she became the Democratic candidate for the main election.

In the general election, Wendy Brawley won the seat for District 70. She received a large majority of the votes, becoming the new State Representative.

Re-election in 2018

In 2018, Wendy Brawley ran for re-election to her seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives. She was the only Democratic candidate, so there was no primary election that year. She easily won the general election and continued to serve her district.

The 2022 Election

After the 2020 United States census, the boundaries of many political districts changed. Wendy Brawley's District 70 was combined with parts of another district, District 80, which was represented by Jermaine Johnson. This meant that Wendy Brawley and Jermaine Johnson, both Democrats, had to run against each other in the 2022 Democratic primary election.

In a very close election, Jermaine Johnson won by just 115 votes. This meant that Wendy Brawley's time as a State Representative ended in November 2022.

Personal Life

Wendy Brawley was born in Queens, a part of New York City. Today, she lives in Hopkins, South Carolina. She is married to Paul Brawley, and they have two children named Paul Jr. and Kanita.
