West Doubtful Canyon is a canyon located in the Peloncillo Mountains. It is mostly found in Cochise County, Arizona, close to the New Mexico border. This canyon was once part of a larger area known simply as "Doubtful Canyon" in the 1800s.

Today, the eastern part of the original "Doubtful Canyon" is still called Doubtful Canyon. It goes down into the Animas Valley in Hidalgo County, New Mexico. The western part is now known as West Doubtful Canyon. It leads down into the San Simon Valley in Cochise County, Arizona.

History of the Canyon

The Peloncillo Mountains were a popular shortcut for travelers moving east and west. This was because of the water sources and a low area between the two canyons. West Doubtful Canyon and Doubtful Canyon together formed a pass through these mountains.

The famous Butterfield Overland Mail route used this pass. This was a stagecoach service that delivered mail and passengers across the country.

The canyon earned its name because it was a common spot for attacks. These attacks were carried out by the Apache people during the Apache Wars. Travelers had to be very careful when passing through this area.
