About the West Gouldsboro Union Church
The West Gouldsboro Union Church sits on the east side of South Gouldsboro Road (SR 186). It is on a wide piece of land that separates Jones Pond and Jones Cove. The church is about half a mile (0.8 km) south of United States Route 1.
What the Church Looks Like
The church building is made of wood and has a shape that looks a bit like the letter "L". The main part of the church has a roof that slopes down steeply. This roof runs parallel to the street. At the front, there's a wide section with a cross-shaped roof. There is also an entrance area with a square tower on top. The tower has a pointy, pyramid-shaped roof.
Below the front roof section, you can see three round-shaped windows. There are also bands of carved wood below the triangular part of the roof. The top part of the roof is covered in flat wooden boards called clapboard. However, the very peak has special wooden decorations that look like the "Stick style."
The tower section has a double door for entering the church. On either side of the door are windows that can slide up and down. Above this, the tower widens out to its first level. This level has a single round window, often called a rose window. Above that, there's a row of decorative arches that are filled in. Below the roof of the tower, there's a band of half-round shapes. Inside the church, the walls are covered with narrow wooden boards that have patterns.
How the Church Was Built
The West Gouldsboro Union Church was built over several years, from 1888 to 1891. It took this long because people built it as they got money and volunteers to help. We don't know who the architect was who designed it.
This church is one of only a few wooden churches built along the coast of Maine during that time. Most churches built for summer vacation areas back then were made of stone or brick. The West Gouldsboro Union Church is special because of its unique layout and the way its inside was decorated.
