Discover West Haven Green
The West Haven Green is a central spot in town. It has sidewalks all around its edge. Paths also lead from the corners and sides into the middle. It's a great place for a walk or to just relax.
What You'll See on the Green
The most important building on the green is the beautiful Congregational Church. It was built way back in 1859. Behind the church, you'll find a quiet cemetery.
Around the green, there are several special markers. These are memorials that remember brave people who served in wars. You can also see a bandstand where music might be played. A tall flagpole stands proudly, too.
- Benches: You'll find wooden benches scattered around the green. They are perfect for sitting and enjoying the view.
- Chess Table: Near Main Street, there's a stone chess table. You can bring your own chess pieces and play a game!
- Firefighters' Monument: At the north end of Main Street, there's a stone monument. It honors West Haven firefighters. On top of it, there's a large bell.
- Revolutionary War Boulder: Near Savin Avenue, there's a big rock. It remembers British Adjutant William Campbell. He saved Reverend Noah Williston during a British invasion on July 5, 1779. This happened during the American Revolutionary War.
- Modern Bandstand: A newer, eight-sided bandstand is located near Church Street.
Buildings Around the Green
The streets around the green have different kinds of buildings.
Campbell Avenue Buildings
Buildings on Campbell Street are mostly two-story shops. They were built in the 1900s. One special building is a three-story brick structure. It's on the corner of Main Street and Campbell Avenue. This building has an Italianate style. The Town Hall, built in 1969, is also at this intersection.
Savin Avenue Buildings
Savin Avenue mainly has single-family homes from the early 1900s. One building that stands out is a red-brick funeral home. It is built in the Colonial Revival style.
Church Street Buildings
On the west corner of Church Street, across from the green, are two old wooden houses. They were built in the 1800s. The rest of this block is home to the Christ Episcopal Church. It has its own buildings and grounds.
Why This Area is Historic
The West Haven Green Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 11, 2000. This list includes places in the United States that are important to history.
The district includes the green itself. It also includes 20 out of 23 buildings around the green. These buildings are called "contributing properties." This means they help make the area historically important. Two memorials on the Green are also special. The World War I memorial and the Firefighters' Monument are also considered important parts of the district.
