West Kinderhook was once a small community located right on the edge of two counties in Indiana: Tipton County and Hamilton County. Today, it's known as a "former settlement." This means it was a place where people lived and worked, but it no longer exists as a town or village.
The Story of West Kinderhook
West Kinderhook was planned out and mapped in 1841 by a doctor named Silas Blount. The village was unique because it was located in both Tipton and Hamilton Counties at the same time.
A few plots of land were sold, and people started to settle there. However, the growth of West Kinderhook did not last long. It stopped suddenly when a new railroad station, called Buena Vista, was built. This station was located about two and a half miles west of West Kinderhook. Because the railroad brought people and business to Buena Vista, West Kinderhook slowly faded away.
