Where is West Portal?
West Portal is found where two roads meet: Route 173 and County Route 643. It's about 5 miles (8.2 km) southwest of a town called Hampton.
Trains and Tunnels
A very important railway line, called the Lehigh Line, runs right through West Portal. This railway used to be part of the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
One of the most interesting things about West Portal is that it's home to the north entrance of the Pattenburg Tunnel. This tunnel is a big underground passage that goes right underneath Musconetcong Mountain. It's a key part of the railway system in the area.
