Exploring the West Side Historic District
This historic district is a residential area on the west side of Washington, Iowa. When it was studied, it had many important buildings and sites. These include 184 buildings that help tell the story of the past. There's also a special park, a unique structure, and an object that are part of its history.
Homes from the Past
The houses in this district were built over a long period. The oldest home was constructed in 1856. Most of the houses are single-family homes. Many are made of wood, but some are built from brick or stucco. They range from one to two stories tall.
Architectural Styles to See
The district is famous for its large collection of Victorian style homes. These were built from the 1880s to the early 1900s. You can also find other popular styles here. These include American Foursquare, American Craftsman, and bungalows. Two homes in the district are so important they are listed separately on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Joseph Keck House (built around 1860) and the Frank Stewart House (built in 1894).
Sunset Park and Its History
One important part of the district is Sunset Park. This park was created by people who lived in the neighborhood in the early 1900s. It sits just west of the homes. A very old building, the Alexander Young Cabin, was moved to the park in 1912. This cabin was built in 1840 and is also listed on the National Register. A special marker in the park honors the person who first donated the land. You can also find a section of West Washington Boulevard paved with brick. This brick road is another historic feature of the district.
