About West Tower
West Tower is 140 meters (459 feet) tall, including its spire. It has 40 floors. This makes it Liverpool’s tallest building.
It is also one of the tallest buildings in the United Kingdom. On a clear day, you can see far across the city. You can even see over the Mersey River to the Wirral area and as far as Blackpool.
The first five floors of West Tower are the main offices for the Beetham Organization. The other floors are mostly fancy apartments and penthouses.
Height Comparison
West Tower is the highest building in Liverpool when you don't count antennas. Some other tall buildings, like St. John's Beacon, have antennas that make them seem taller. But West Tower's main structure is higher.
Inside the Building
The offices on the first five floors have large glass windows. This makes the building look lively from the street. There is also a special glass elevator and stairs for the offices. They offer great views of the river.
The 127 apartments in the tower have glass walls. These walls are made of clear and frosted panels. The apartments are designed so people can see both the city and the river. The top floors have amazing penthouses with outdoor terraces.
The 34th floor is home to Panoramic, a restaurant. It is Liverpool's highest restaurant. This floor has clear glass all around. This gives diners amazing views of Liverpool and beyond.
Awards and Recognition
West Tower has won awards for its design and use of space. At the 4th Liverpool Daily Post Regional Property Awards, it won the "Best Mixed Use Development" prize.
This award was given to the architects, Aedas. They were recognized for building an "iconic" (meaning very famous and unique) building. They also made good use of a small piece of land that might have been empty otherwise.
What Happened to the Company
In 2011, the companies that owned West Tower had some financial problems. This was because property prices went down. As a result, the building went into a process called "administration." This is when experts help a company manage its money when it's having difficulties.
Most of the apartments in West Tower had been bought by people who wanted to rent them out. A smaller number were lived in by their owners or were still for sale.
