The West Virginia Library Association (WVLA) is a special group for people who work in libraries across West Virginia. This includes librarians and other library staff. The main office for WVLA is in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The group helps libraries and library workers do their best job. They also work to make libraries even better for everyone in the state.

How WVLA Started

The West Virginia Library Association began a long time ago. It was founded on October 22, 1914. This happened in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The idea came from a meeting of the Federated Women's Clubs of West Virginia.

The First Steps

S. Scollay Page was in charge of literature and library extensions for the state federation. She invited librarians from all over West Virginia to this important meeting. At the meeting, the association was officially created. S. Scollay Page became its very first president.

Becoming a Non-Profit

Later, in 1980, WVLA became a state non-profit organization. This means it works to help people and does not aim to make money.

Making Libraries Better

WVLA has done many important things for libraries in West Virginia. One big achievement was helping to create the West Virginia Library Commission.

The Library Commission

The West Virginia Library Commission was started in 1929. WVLA worked hard to convince the state to create this commission. The commission helped public libraries grow a lot throughout West Virginia. It made it easier for more people to use and enjoy libraries.

Publications

The West Virginia Library Association also publishes a magazine. It is called West Virginia Libraries. This magazine shares news and information about libraries in the state.
