A Look at Westfield Riccarton's History
Westfield Riccarton has changed a lot over the years. It started small and grew into the large place it is today.
Big Changes in the 1990s
In 1992, Riccarton Mall got a huge makeover. Many shops moved to new spots inside the mall. Only a few, like the department store Farmers, stayed in their original places. This big update also added a new food court where you could grab a bite to eat. Plus, a new car park was built on the roof.
Exciting Upgrades in the 2000s
Between 2003 and 2005, Westfield spent about 90 million New Zealand dollars to make the mall even better. A big part of this project was adding fun things to do. They built a new Hoyts Cinema with six screens! One of these screens is the second-largest movie screen in all of New Zealand. Imagine watching a movie on that! They also added a special area with restaurants and cafes.
More Growth in the Late 2000s
On May 28, 2009, the mall opened a new part of its expansion. This cost about 75 million dollars. This new section brought 40 more shops and another cafe area. An extra movie screen was also added to the Hoyts cinema. Before all this, a new four-level car park was finished in January 2009. It could hold 400 cars. These changes made the mall much bigger, reaching about 54,000 square metres in total.
