A Look Back: Westport's History
The first people to settle in Westport were David Welch and his family in 1769. The Morrell family also arrived around that time. Later, in 1783, several families known as United Empire Loyalists moved to the area. These were people who stayed loyal to Britain during the American Revolution.
Becoming a Village
Westport officially became an incorporated village in 1946. This means it gained a local government to manage its own affairs.

To reach Westport, you need to take a ferry! One ferry connects Westport on Brier Island to Freeport, Nova Scotia on Long Island. Another ferry runs from Digby Neck to Long Island, making it easier to travel to and from the mainland.
Famous People from Westport
- Joshua Slocum grew up in Westport. His mother was born there. He became famous for being the very first person to sail all the way around the world by himself! There's a monument in the southern part of the village to remember him.
- Roland Richardson, a well-known mathematician, was the principal of Westport's high school. He worked there from 1899 to 1902.

In 2021, a count called the 2021 Census of Population showed that Westport had 193 residents. These people lived in 94 homes out of 119 total houses. This number was a bit lower than in 2016, when 218 people lived there. The village covers an area of about 11.68 square kilometers.
