Freeport is a small village located in Digby County, Nova Scotia. You can find it on Long Island, which is in the famous Bay of Fundy.

This village is a busy fishing village built around a special tidal basin. It's a wonderful place for many activities like watching birds, exploring beaches, and hiking on trails. You can also go whale watching here! The area is known for its unique plants and animals.

History of Freeport

Freeport was started in 1784 by people called Loyalists. They came here and began fishing and trading businesses. Before the Loyalists arrived, the land was home to the Mi'kmaq First Nation.

Some of the local place names, like Petit Passage and Grand Passage, were given by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain. He first visited this area way back in 1604. The village itself might have been named after Freeport, Maine. Another idea is that it was called "Freeport" because its harbor never freezes in winter. This is due to the very strong tides in the Bay of Fundy, which keep the water moving. A well-known Black Loyalist named Rose Fortune is thought to have lived here around 1795.

Population and People

In 2021, a count of the population was done by Statistics Canada. It showed that Freeport had 217 people living there. These people lived in 113 homes. This was a small change from 2016, when the population was 223.

The village covers an area of about 7.57 square kilometers (about 2.92 square miles). This means that in 2021, there were about 28.7 people living in each square kilometer of Freeport.
