Wheatland is a small, quiet place in Quay County, New Mexico, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. You can find Wheatland about 15 miles (24 km) south of San Jon, right off New Mexico State Road 469.
A Look Back at Wheatland
Wheatland's story really began with its first school. Before the main Wheatland School, there were a few smaller, one-room schools nearby. These included places like North Bend School, Blair School, and Adobe School.
The First Wheatland School
In 1920, these smaller schools joined together. They formed the first Wheatland School. This school was built specifically for this purpose. It was a building made of wood with a stucco finish.
A New School and Community Hub
Sadly, the original Wheatland School burned down in April 1938. But the community quickly built a new one! The WPA helped with this project. The WPA was a government program during the Great Depression. It created jobs by building public projects like schools and roads.
The new buildings were very strong. They had steel inside and smooth plaster walls. They even used colorful rocks from a nearby quarry for decoration. A special house for teachers, called a duplex teacherage, was also built. These new buildings were finished in 1939.
The school was used for learning until the early 1950s. After that, it became a community center for a while. It was a place where people could gather. Eventually, the buildings were no longer used.
