Discovering Wheeling's Past
How Wheeling Began
Wheeling was founded a long time ago, in the early 1800s. This happened after the Chickasaw people, a Native American tribe, sold their lands. The new settlers then moved into the area.
Wheeling was an important port on the Tombigbee River. A port is a place where boats can load and unload goods. It was located a few miles south of another village called Van Buren.
Why Wheeling Disappeared
Even though Wheeling had a hotel and stores, it did not last very long. The nearby town of Van Buren grew bigger and took over most of Wheeling's businesses. This meant people moved away from Wheeling, and it slowly became a ghost town.
Wheeling Today
Today, the area where Wheeling used to be is covered by a forest. You can find it on the east side of the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway. This waterway is a large canal system that connects rivers.
