The land where Whiskey Pete's stands was once owned by a gas station owner named Pete MacIntyre. People say Pete had a hard time earning enough money just selling gas. So, he started making and selling his own homemade alcohol, which was against the law back then. Because of this, people called him "Whiskey Pete."

When Whiskey Pete passed away in 1933, a legend says he wanted to be buried standing up. He wished to hold a bottle of his homemade drink. This way, he could watch over the area he loved. Later, when workers were building a bridge connecting Whiskey Pete's to Buffalo Bill's hotel, they accidentally found his unmarked grave. His body was moved. Now, it is said to be buried in one of the caves where he used to make his special drinks.

Whiskey Pete's first opened its doors in 1977. It was built by Ernest Jay Primm. This was the very first casino to be built in the area, which was then called State Line. In 1983, a new hotel tower was added. This made the property much bigger.
