White Head Island is a small island found in the Bay of Fundy. It's located near Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick, Canada. In 2011, about 162 people lived there. The island used to be managed as a special local area, but this changed in 2023.
Island Economy
The main ways people make a living on White Head Island are through aquaculture and fishing. Aquaculture means farming fish or shellfish in the water.
Education on the Island
White Head Island has its own elementary school. This school teaches students from kindergarten up to grade 6. The younger kids (kindergarten to grade 2) are in one classroom. The older kids (grades 3 to 6) are in another.
There have been talks about moving these students to the bigger Grand Manan Community School. However, the younger students still attend school on White Head Island. This is because they would need to take a ferry to get to the other school. This makes White Head Elementary the smallest school in the Anglophone South School District.
Getting Around
Coastal Transport Limited runs a free car ferry service. This ferry connects White Head Island to Grand Manan Island. The ferry is called William Frankland. It operates all year round, making it easy for people and cars to travel between the islands.
Community Life
Until 2022, the island had a small general store. It was located right at the dock where the ferry arrives. This store was a handy place for people to buy everyday items.
There is also a Baptist church on the island. The current church building was finished in 1981. However, records show that there have been churches on the island for a long time. Another church building was dedicated in 1928 before the current one was built.
