White Oak Creek (Spring River tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

White Oak Creek is a cool stream located in the southwestern part of Missouri. It flows through two counties, Lawrence and Jasper. This stream is like a smaller helper river, also known as a tributary, that eventually flows into a bigger river called the Spring River.

The Journey of White Oak Creek

White Oak Creek starts its journey in the northwest part of Lawrence County, near a town called Miller. This starting point, where a river or stream begins, is called its headwaters. Here, small streams that sometimes dry up (called intermittent streams) come together to form White Oak Creek.

From its start, the creek flows northwest, passing by a place called Round Grove. It then turns west and southwest, flowing under Missouri Route 97. As it continues, it passes north of Grays Point and Red Oak.

Flowing Through Jasper County

The creek then crosses into Jasper County, flowing north of Plew. It goes under Missouri Route 96 near Avilla and then under Missouri Route 37. Finally, after its journey, White Oak Creek meets and joins the Spring River east of Carthage. The place where two rivers or streams meet is called a confluence.

How White Oak Creek Got Its Name

The name "White Oak Creek" is quite simple to understand! It was named because of the many beautiful white oak trees that grow all along its banks. These trees are a common sight in the area and gave the creek its special name.
