What is Rock Art?

Rock art includes two main types:

  • Petroglyphs: These are images carved or etched into the rock surface. People used tools to chip away the dark outer layer of the rock. This revealed the lighter rock underneath.
  • Pictographs: These are paintings made on rock surfaces. Ancient artists used natural pigments. These pigments came from minerals and plants. They mixed them with water or animal fat to make paint.

Who Made the Art?

The rock art in White River Narrows shows two main styles. Each style is linked to different groups of people:

  • Hunter-Gatherers: One style is from early hunter-gatherer groups. These people lived by hunting animals and gathering plants. This style is part of what is called the Basin and Range tradition. Their art often shows animals, hunting scenes, or simple human figures.
  • Fremont Groups: The other style comes from the Fremont people. They were a different ancient culture. They lived in parts of the western United States. Their art often includes unique human-like figures. These figures sometimes have trapezoid-shaped bodies. They also drew geometric shapes and symbols.
