Metrosideros diffusa, often called the white rātā or climbing rātā, is a special plant from New Zealand. The Māori people call it akakura. It's a type of vine that grows in forests. This plant is endemic to New Zealand, meaning it's found nowhere else in the world.

Unlike some other rātā plants that grow into huge trees, the white rātā lives its whole life as a climbing vine. It is one of three rātā vines that have white flowers. The white rātā is the most common climbing rātā you'll find in the wild. It grows naturally in lowland forests across the North, South, and Stewart islands.

What Does White Rātā Look Like?

The Metrosideros diffusa vine can climb up to 6 meters (about 20 feet) tall. It has small, shiny leaves that can be 2 centimeters (about 0.8 inches) or more in length. The tips of its leaves are usually rounded.

Flowers and Blooming Time

This plant blooms from the middle of spring to early summer. During this time, it produces beautiful white or pale pink flowers. These flowers are a key feature that helps identify the white rātā.

Growing White Rātā

Metrosideros diffusa is not a plant that many people grow in their gardens. However, you can find it at special plant nurseries in New Zealand that focus on native plants.

'Crystal Showers' Cultivar

There is one special type of white rātā known as Metrosideros diffusa 'Crystal Showers'. A 'cultivar' is a plant that has been specially bred for certain features. This particular cultivar grows slowly and spreads along the ground. It has white flowers, but its leaves are a mix of cream and green colors, making it unique.
