The Whitehall Street Retail Historic District is a special area in Atlanta, Georgia. It's known for its important history. This district is mainly around Peachtree Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. It also includes Broad, Forsyth, and Mitchell Streets. Discovering the Whitehall District
The name of this historic district comes from an old name for Peachtree Street. This street is one of the main roads in Atlanta. For a very long time, Whitehall Street was a major shopping area. People even called it "Atlanta's commercial and retail core."
A Look at Its Past
In the early days of Atlanta, this area was a busy place. It was a center for trade and business. Later, in the early 1900s, many famous stores opened here. Big names like Rich's, H. L. Green, Kress, and McCrory's had shops in this district.
Standing Up for Change
The Whitehall Street area is also important for another reason. During the civil rights movement in the 1960s, many sit-ins happened here. A sit-in is when people peacefully protest by sitting down in a public place. They refused to leave until their demands were met. These brave actions helped bring about important changes for equal rights.
Becoming a Historic Place
In April 2019, the Whitehall Street Retail Historic District was first added to Georgia's list of historic places. Then, on August 6, 2020, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means the district is recognized for its important history and special buildings.
Amazing Architecture
The buildings in this district show off many cool styles. You can see Art Deco and Art Moderne designs. There are also buildings in the Italian Renaissance Revival and Neoclassical Revival styles. Famous architects like A. Ten Eyck Brown and Willis F. Denny helped design some of these buildings.
