Whitharral (pronounced "WHIT-hair-ul") is a small community in Hockley County, Texas, United States. It is an "unincorporated community," which means it does not have its own local government like a city. Instead, the county government manages its services.
Whitharral's Story
Whitharral was started in 1924. This happened after large areas of land from the Littlefield ranch were sold. The community was named after John Whitfield Harral. He was a leader at the Yellow House Land Company, which sold the ranch lands to farmers.
Soon after, a school opened in 1925. A post office followed in 1926. The community also gained cotton gins, three churches, a garage, and a general store.
Whitharral has been hit by tornadoes two times. The first one happened in 1957 on Easter Sunday. It caused some damage to homes. The second, more powerful tornado struck on April 17, 1970. It badly damaged parts of the community. The school's gym was flattened just minutes after people had left it.
Learning and Sports
Students in Whitharral attend schools in the Whitharral Independent School District. The high school is well-known for its football team, the Panthers. They play six-man football, which is a version of the game with fewer players.
The Panthers have played in the state championship three times. They won the championship in both 1981 and 2001.
The girls' basketball team, called the Lady Panthers, also has a winning history. On March 2, 2013, they won the Class 1A Division II state championship. They beat the team from Saltillo, Texas, to claim the title.
