Whitmire Creek (Peloncillo Mountains) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Whitmire Creek is a small stream that flows into Animas Creek in Hidalgo County, New Mexico. It starts in Whitmire Canyon within the Peloncillo Mountains in Cochise County, Arizona. This creek is one of two streams named Whitmire Creek that join Animas Creek in the Animas Valley. Both creeks were named after J. B. Whitmire, an early settler who started the Whitmire Ranch in the 1880s.

What is Whitmire Creek?

Whitmire Creek is a natural waterway, like a small river. It's known as a "tributary" because it flows into a larger stream, which in this case is Animas Creek. This creek helps carry water through parts of both Arizona and New Mexico. It plays a role in the natural water system of the region.

Where Does it Start and End?

Whitmire Creek begins its journey in Whitmire Canyon. This starting point, called its "source," is high up in the mountains at about 5,960 feet (1,817 meters) above sea level. You can find its source just over the state line in Cochise County, Arizona.

The creek then flows until it meets Animas Creek. This meeting point is called a "confluence." The mouth of Whitmire Creek, where it joins Animas Creek, is at a lower elevation of about 5,029 feet (1,533 meters). Along its path, another smaller stream called Walnut Creek also flows into Whitmire Creek at the mouth of Whitmire Canyon.

Named After a Pioneer

Whitmire Creek, and another creek with the same name nearby, are both named after an important person in the area's history: J. B. Whitmire. He was one of the first settlers to arrive in this region during the 1880s. Mr. Whitmire established the Whitmire Ranch, which was a significant part of the early community in the Animas Valley. Naming the creeks after him was a way to remember his contributions to the area.
