Whitton is a small, unincorporated community in the state of Texas, USA. It is located in Van Zandt County. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the county.

Discover Whitton

Whitton is found about eight miles southwest of a town called Canton. It's located along a road known as Farm-to-Market Road 1651. These roads help connect farms and rural areas to bigger markets and towns.

How Whitton Got Its Name

The community of Whitton was named after an early settler. His name was Elijah Whitton, and he came from Alabama. He built a log house in the area, which was still standing many years later, even in the 1990s! Sometimes, the community's name was spelled a little differently, like "Whiton" or "Whitten."

The Whitton School

In 1886, Elijah Whitton gave some land to be used for a school. This school was sometimes called the Whitton School or the Greenwood School. For many years, it helped educate the children of the community. In 1949, the Whitton School joined with the Canton Independent School District. This meant it became part of a larger school system.

A Community Hub

After the school closed, the building found a new purpose. In 1978, the old school building was turned into a community center. This is a place where people from Whitton can gather for meetings, events, and other community activities. It helps keep the community connected.
