History of the Church Building
The current building of Whitton Baptist Church has a rich history. The two foundation stones, which are special markers, were placed on October 20, 1934. The church officially opened its doors on April 6, 1935.
Replacing an Older Church
This new church building was built using money from the sale of another church, St Margarets Baptist Church. It took the place of an even older church called Whitton Gospel Hall, which had been open since 1881. So, the community has had a Baptist church in the area for a long time!
New Halls for Activities
In September 1968, the church opened new halls. These halls were built on what used to be an old tennis court. They replaced two older halls. One of the previous halls was unfortunately destroyed in a fire in 1966. The other old hall was on a piece of land that is now part of the church's car park. These new halls provide space for many church activities and community events.
Church Leaders (Ministers)
A minister is a leader in a Baptist church. They help guide the church members and lead worship services. Whitton Baptist Church has had several ministers over the years:
- 1936: Rev. Walter G. Davis
- 1943: Rev. Albert Cassidy
- 1970: Rev. Derek Buckingham
- 1976: Rev. Barry Vendy
- 1984: Rev. Martin Smith
- 1998: Rev. Andy Gore
- 2014: Rev. Gordon Hindmarch (who is the current minister)
