The Story of Whoppers
How Whoppers Began
The story of Whoppers began in 1939. A company called Overland Candy Company made a candy similar to Whoppers. It was a malted milk candy named "Giants."
In 1947, Overland Candy Company joined with other companies. These included Chicago Biscuit Company, Leaf Gum, and Laf Machinery. Two years later, in 1949, the new company, Leaf Brands, brought back the malted milk balls. They gave them the new name "Whoppers."
Changing Hands
Over the years, Whoppers changed owners a few times. In the 1960s, W. R. Grace bought all the products from Leaf Brands. But Leaf bought them back in 1976.
Then, in 1996, a big change happened. Hershey Foods Corporation bought the candy part of Leaf North America. This company was owned by Huhtamäki Oyj from Finland. Since then, Hershey has been making Whoppers candy.
How Whoppers Were Packaged
When Whoppers first came out, they were sold without wrappers. You could get two candies for just one cent! Later, new machines helped wrap candies. Smaller Whoppers were then packaged and sold five for one cent. These were called "Fivesomes."
Leaf Brands also started using a special milk carton package for candy. This became a famous way to sell Whoppers.
Different Flavors and Shapes
Whoppers come in special versions for holidays. For Christmas, there are "Sno-Balls." For Easter, you can find "Mini Robin Eggs." Both of these have a hard candy shell on the outside.
In 2000, Hershey made "Mini Whoppers." These were smaller versions of the classic chocolate flavor. In 2006, a new strawberry milkshake flavor came out. Later, they also released Reese's Peanut Butter Cups flavored Whoppers. This flavor was stopped around 2014 or 2015.
For Easter in 2009, three more milkshake flavors were introduced. These were vanilla, blueberry, and orange cream. The vanilla ones came back in 2016 as a special seasonal treat.
What Are Whoppers Made Of?
Whoppers are made from several ingredients. The main ones are sugar, corn syrup, and a special oil called partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil. They also contain whey (from milk) and malted milk. Malted milk is made from barley malt, wheat flour, milk, and salt.
Other ingredients include cocoa, and small amounts of things like resinous glaze, sorbitan tristearate, and soy lecithin. There's also salt, natural and artificial flavors, calcium carbonate, and tapioca dextrin. These ingredients give Whoppers their unique taste and texture.
