The Sweet Story of Whoppers
How Whoppers Began
The idea for Whoppers started way back in 1939. A company called Overland Candy Company made a similar candy called "Giants." Later, in 1949, a company called Leaf Brands brought back these malted milk balls, but they gave them the new name "Whoppers."
Who Owns Whoppers?
Over the years, Whoppers changed hands a few times. In the 1960s, W. R. Grace bought Leaf Brands. But then, Leaf bought them back in 1976. Finally, in 1996, The Hershey Company bought the part of Leaf that made candies. Hershey has been making Whoppers ever since!
How Whoppers Were Sold
When Whoppers first came out, they were sold without wrappers! You could get two candies for just one cent. Later, with new wrapping machines, smaller Whoppers were put into packages of five for one cent. These were called "Fivesomes." Leaf Brands also started putting Whoppers in a special milk carton-shaped box. This box became a famous way to buy the candy.
Fun Whoppers Flavors and Shapes
Around 1950, a special egg-shaped Whoppers candy was made for Easter. These were called Mini Robin Eggs. They look different from regular Whoppers because they are egg-shaped and have a speckled candy shell.
In 2000, Hershey made Mini Whoppers, which are smaller versions of the original. They also tried out new flavors! In 2006, a strawberry milkshake flavor came out. Later, there was even a Reese's Peanut Butter Cups flavored Whopper, but it's not made anymore. For Easter in 2009, three new milkshake flavors were released: vanilla, blueberry, and orange cream. The vanilla ones sometimes come back for a short time as a seasonal treat.
What Are Whoppers Made Of?
Whoppers are made from several ingredients. The main ones are sugar, corn syrup, and a special oil called palm kernel oil. They also contain whey (which comes from milk), malted milk, cocoa, and a little bit of salt. Other ingredients help give them their smooth coating and flavor.
