Whynot is a small, unincorporated community located in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government. Whynot is about 16.3 miles (26.2 km) southeast of the city of Meridian. It is found along Mississippi Highway 19.
The Story Behind Whynot's Name
The area where Whynot is located first had a post office. This post office was named Whitesville. It opened on June 23, 1852. A person named Isham K. Pringle was the first postmaster. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
Just a few months later, on December 30, 1852, the name of the post office was changed. It became "Why Not" (two words). The post office continued to serve the community for many years. However, it finally closed on September 30, 1933. After that, people in Whynot received their mail from Meridian.
