The Story of Wielka droga
Love and War: A Journey Through History
The movie's story begins just before World War II started in 1939. It follows the lives of two young people, Adam and Irena, who fall in love in the city of Lwów. Their happiness is cut short when the war breaks out.
Separation and Survival in Siberia
Adam and Irena are both sent far away to Siberia by the Soviets. This was a very difficult time for many Polish people. By chance, they meet again briefly in Siberia. They are both joining a new Polish army being formed there.
Adam's Long March to Freedom
After their short reunion, Adam and Irena are separated once more. Adam marches with the Polish army from Siberia. His journey takes him through the Middle East. He then fights on the Italian front line. This long journey is what the film's title, 'The Great Way', refers to.
The Battle of Monte Cassino and Recovery
Adam takes part in the fierce Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy. During the first attack, he gets hurt and temporarily loses his eyesight. While recovering in a military hospital, a kind nurse finds his diary. She starts pretending to be Irena to cheer him up. Her feelings for him grow.
However, the real Irena eventually arrives at the hospital. Adam recovers from his injuries. After the Polish army's victory at Monte Cassino, Adam and Irena stay together. They follow the army to northern Italy. They decide to settle there after the war ends.
A Unique Look at Polish War History
This film is special because it uses real footage from the war. This footage was taken by the Polish army itself. Wielka droga is the only movie that shows Poland's part in the Italian Campaign (World War II). It helps us understand the experiences of Polish soldiers and civilians during this time.
