Wiener FC 1898 facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wiener FC 1898 was one of the very first football clubs in Vienna, the capital city of Austria. This club was active for a short time, from 1897 until 1903.

The Club's Story

How it Started

The Wiener FC 1898 began as the football part of a gymnastics club called Deutsch-Österreichischen Turnverein Wien. This gymnastics club was started by Jewish members from another older club, the Ersten Wiener Turnverein 1861. In the 1880s, some sports clubs only accepted members of German background. Because of this, Jewish members decided to form their own club, the Deutsch-Österreichischen Turnverein.

Playing Football

In 1898, the football section became its own separate club. In their first year, they played in the final of the Challenge-Cup. This was a big football competition for clubs from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Wiener FC 1898 lost the final 7-0 to Vienna Cricket and Football-Club.

In the next few years, the club did well, reaching the semi-finals of the Challenge-Cup. In the 1900-1901 season, the Österreichischen Fußball-Union started a league. Wiener FC 1898 was placed in the top division, called the 1. Klasse. They also played for the Tagblatt-Pokal, which was a cup named after a Vienna newspaper.

Why the Club Ended

Wiener FC 1898 stopped playing in the league because they often had trouble finding enough players for their matches. This made it hard for them to keep going as a football club.
