The Wikepa are a group of Indigenous Australian people. They are one of the many Wik tribes who live in the northern part of Queensland, specifically on the Cape York Peninsula.

The Wikepa Language

The Wikepa people spoke their own language, also called Wikepa (or Wik-Epa). This language was part of a larger group known as the Wik languages.

  • An expert named Peter Sutton said that older people near Cape Keerweer used "Wikepa" or "Wikiita" to describe the way two local family groups spoke.
  • Their language was very similar to the one spoken by the Wikmean clan.

Where the Wikepa Lived

The Wikepa were a small tribe. Their traditional land was about 300 square miles (777 square kilometers) in size. This area was located around a place called Cape Keerweer.

The Wikepa People Today

By the time World War II ended, there were very few Wikepa people left. In 1958, only a small number were known to be living at a mission in Aurukun.
