Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Wik Paach or Wikapatja were an Indigenous Australian group. They lived in the northern part of Queensland, on the Cape York Peninsula.

The Wik Paach people were a small group. Their land was around the Archer River delta. A delta is where a river splits into many smaller streams before flowing into the sea. Their territory was mostly made up of mangrove swamps. These are special forests that grow in salty water along coastlines.

Language of the Wik Paach

The Wik Paach people spoke a language called Wik Paach. Even though it has "Wik" in its name, it's not part of the main group of Wik languages.

Where the Wik Paach Lived

Their homeland was quite small. Experts like Norman Tindale estimated it was about 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). This area was focused on the delta of the Archer River.

The Wik Paach People Today

By 1974, when Norman Tindale wrote about them, it was believed that the Wik Paach people no longer existed as a distinct group.
