Wilbur is a neighborhood located within the city of Trenton. It is found in Mercer County, in the state of New Jersey. For a short time, Wilbur was its own independent town, called a borough, from 1891 to 1898.
Wilbur's History
Wilbur officially became its own town, or borough, on April 24, 1891. This happened after the New Jersey Legislature, which is the group of lawmakers for the state, passed a special act. Before becoming a borough, Wilbur was part of Hamilton Township.
How Wilbur Became a Borough
The decision to become a borough was made by the people living there. Six days before the official date, on April 18, 1891, a special vote called a referendum was held. The people voted to make Wilbur an independent borough. This meant it would have its own local government.
Joining Trenton
Wilbur did not stay an independent borough for very long. On February 28, 1898, the borough became a part of Trenton. This process is called annexation, which means one area joins a larger city. When Wilbur joined Trenton, it became known as the 12th Ward of the city.
