Wilbur Mitcham (December 10, 1923 – June 15, 2003) was a talented American chef. He was known for his amazing cooking skills and for working at the same restaurant for a very long time.
Early Life and Military Service
Wilbur Mitcham was born on December 10, 1923. When he was a young man, he joined the U.S. Army. He served as a soldier who operated big guns called field artillery during World War II.
However, he had to leave the Army early because of health issues. After leaving the military, he moved to New York City. There, he learned how to cook from an Asian chef, which helped him start his career.
A Long Career as a Chef
In 1943, Mitcham returned to his hometown of Macon, Georgia. He got a job as a cook at Len Berg's Restaurant. He quickly became known as "Chef" by everyone who knew him.
Chef Mitcham worked as the main chef at Len Berg's Restaurant for over 60 years! He cooked for many famous people, including sports legends like golfer Ben Hogan, golfer Sam Snead, and baseball star Joe DiMaggio. He kept cooking until he became ill.
Family Life and Legacy
Wilbur Mitcham was married to Annie Mae Leonard for more than 60 years. He passed away on June 15, 2003, which was Father's Day that year.
Mitcham was a father to 13 children. His life and work are remembered in the book “Remembering Len Berg's Restaurant”. He is also mentioned in a book written by his daughter, Lydia Meredith.
