Sir Wilfred Ebenezer Jacobs (born October 19, 1919 – died March 11, 1995) was a very important leader in Antigua and Barbuda. He was the first ever Governor-General of this island nation.

A Governor-General is like a special representative for the King or Queen in countries that are part of the Commonwealth of Nations. They play a big role in the government, especially when a country becomes independent.

Early Career and Public Service

Sir Wilfred Jacobs started his career in law. He was appointed as the Attorney General of the Leeward Islands from 1957 to 1959. An Attorney General is the main legal advisor to the government. After that, he served as the Attorney General for Antigua in 1960.

From 1960 to 1967, he held several important positions in the government of the British colonies. These roles helped him gain a lot of experience in how a country is run.

Becoming Governor and Governor-General

Sir Wilfred Jacobs became the Governor of Antigua and Barbuda in 1967. He served in this role until 1981. This was a very important time for Antigua and Barbuda because it was moving towards becoming an independent country.

When Antigua and Barbuda gained its independence on November 1, 1981, Sir Wilfred Jacobs made history. He became the country's first Governor-General. He held this high office until June 10, 1991. After his time as Governor-General, James Carlisle took over the role.

Sir Wilfred Jacobs is remembered for his dedication and service to Antigua and Barbuda during its journey to independence and in its early years as a sovereign nation.
