Sir James Beethoven Carlisle (born August 5, 1937) is a dentist. He was also the Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda. He served in this important role for 16 years, from 1993 to 2007.

Early Life and Education
James Carlisle was born on August 5, 1937, in Bolans, a village in Antigua. He went to Bolans Public School for his early education. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom to study at Northampton College. He then earned a degree in dentistry from the University of Dundee. In 1991, he also graduated from the American School of Laser Dentistry.
Dental Career
Sir James Carlisle worked as a dentist in both Antigua and Britain. When he returned to Antigua in 1981, he opened his own dental office. He was only the fourth dentist on the island at that time. He also worked as a dental officer for the public health service.
With help from former Prime Minister Vere Bird, he helped create a special program. This program used fluoride to help protect children's teeth. He also helped start a free dental service for people in Antigua and Barbuda. He is a member of the International Society of Laser Dentists and the British Dental Association.
Military Service
Sir James Carlisle served in the British Royal Air Force from 1961 to 1966. Later, he joined the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force. He was part of this force from 1983 to 1993. When he became Governor-General, he automatically became the Commander of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force.
Political Role
Sir James Carlisle was very involved in his local community. Before becoming Governor-General, he was the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. He was chosen by the Prime Minister to be the Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda. He officially started this role on June 10, 1993.
As Governor-General, Sir James represented the Queen. The Queen is the head of state for Antigua and Barbuda. In 1993, he was made a knight, which is why he is called Sir James.
During his time as Governor-General, he held several important positions:
- Grandmaster of four special Antiguan Orders of Chivalry.
- Chief Scout of the Antigua and Barbuda Branch of The Scout Association.
- Patron of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme in Antigua and Barbuda.
- Patron of the Renal Society of Antigua and Barbuda.
Awards and Recognitions
Sir James Carlisle has received several honors for his service:
- He was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) in November 1993.
- He became a Knight of Justice in the Order of St. John (KStJ).
- He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Andrews University in Michigan, USA.
Personal Life
Sir James Carlisle is married to Lady Emma Carlisle. While she was the wife of the Governor-General, Lady Emma helped raise money. She worked with businesses to get funds for local people in her home country.
Sir James Carlisle is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
