Wilhelm Maria Theodor Ernst Richard Graf von Mirbach-Harff (born July 2, 1871 – died July 6, 1918) was an important German diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. He was killed while serving as Germany's ambassador in Moscow, Russia.

A Diplomat's Journey

Wilhelm von Mirbach was born in Bad Ischl, Austria. He came from a noble family in Germany.

He began his career as a diplomat in London in 1899. He worked at the German Embassy there until 1902. After that, he moved to The Hague, a city in the Netherlands.

From 1908 to 1911, Mirbach worked in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Later, he became a political advisor for the German military in Bucharest, Romania. In 1915, he was appointed the German ambassador to Greece. However, he was asked to leave Athens in December 1916. This happened when a new government, friendly to the Allies of World War I, took power.

Ambassador to Russia

Wilhelm von Mirbach played a part in important talks between Russia and Germany. These talks happened in a place called Brest-Litovsk from December 1917 to March 1918. These discussions led to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, which ended Russia's involvement in World War I.

Because of his experience, he was chosen to be the German Ambassador to Russia in April 1918. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat representing their country in another.

The Assassination and Its Impact

Sadly, Mirbach was assassinated at the German embassy in Moscow on July 6, 1918. He was killed by two people, Yakov Blumkin and Nikolai Andreyev. They were members of a group called the Left Socialist-Revolutionaries. This group wanted to restart the war between Russia and Germany.

Blumkin used fake papers to get into Mirbach's home. He shot Mirbach at close range. As Mirbach tried to escape, Andreyev fired another shot. The attackers then jumped out of a window and drove away.

Mirbach's assassination was a major event. It marked the start of a revolt by the Left Socialist-Revolutionaries in Moscow in 1918. After his death, Karl Helfferich became the new German ambassador to Russia.

Interestingly, a relative of Wilhelm von Mirbach, named Andreas von Mirbach, was also killed many years later in 1975.
