Early Life and Education
William Richard Annesley was born in Dublin, Ireland, in a place called Rutland Square (which is now known as Parnell Square). He was the oldest son of William Annesley, 3rd Earl Annesley. His mother was Priscilla Cecilia. William went to school at the University of Cambridge, a famous university in England.
His Political Journey
William became the Earl Annesley in August 1838 after his father passed away. The title "Earl Annesley" was part of the Peerage of Ireland. This meant it was a special title in Ireland, but it did not automatically give him a seat in the House of Lords in the British Parliament.
Instead, he decided to run for election to the House of Commons. This is where elected representatives make laws for the country. He was chosen to represent the area of Great Grimsby in the 1852 election. He served in this role until 1857.
Later, in 1867, he was chosen to be an Irish Representative Peer. This was a special position where he could represent Ireland in the House of Lords. He held this important role until he passed away.
Building Castlewellan Castle
Lord Annesley inherited a large area of land called the Castlewellan Estate in County Down, Ireland. Around 1856, he built a beautiful home on this land called Castlewellan Castle.
Later Life and Legacy
Lord Annesley died in August 1874 when he was 44 years old. He passed away in Cowes, which is on the Isle of Wight in England. He was not married, so his younger brother, Hugh, took over his titles and responsibilities.
