Who Was William Baronsdale?
William Baronsdale was born in Gloucestershire, a county in England, likely between 1530 and 1540. He became a well-known doctor and held many important positions in the medical world.
His Education and Early Career
Baronsdale went to St. John's College, Cambridge, which is a famous university. He was accepted as a special student, called a scholar, in 1551. He worked hard and earned several degrees:
- His first degree, a B.A., in 1554 or 1555.
- His second degree, a M.A., in 1556.
- His highest medical degree, a M.D., in 1568.
While at Cambridge, he was a senior fellow, which means he was an important member of the college. He also managed the college's money as a bursar. Baronsdale was chosen twice to teach medicine, a special job created by a famous doctor named Thomas Linacre. He held this teaching role in 1561 and again in 1564.
A Leading Doctor in London
After his time at Cambridge, William Baronsdale moved to London. There, he became a fellow of the College of Physicians. This was a very important group for doctors in England. He held many key roles within the college:
- He was a wikt:counsellor (an advisor) in 1588, 1600, 1602, and 1604.
- He was a wikt:censor (someone who checked the quality of medical practice) from 1581 to 1585.
- He was the treasurer (managing the college's money) in 1583, 1604, 1605, and 1607. He was actually the very first person to hold the treasurer position!
Perhaps his most important role was being the president of the College of Physicians. He held this top position for eleven years in a row, from 1589 to 1600.
Attending Royalty
William Baronsdale was so respected that he was called upon to treat important people. In April 1582, he was the doctor who attended Mary, Queen of Scots, when she was in Sheffield. This shows how trusted and skilled he was as a physician.
