William Bassett (born around 1602, died 1656) was an important English landowner and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, from 1640 to 1644. During the Civil War, he supported the King's side, known as the Royalists.

Who Was William Bassett?

William Bassett was born in a town called Colchester in England. His father was Martin Bassett. William went to school in Colchester. Later, when he was about 15 years old, he started studying at Christ's College, Cambridge on January 15, 1627.

His Family's Home

In 1609, William's father bought a large estate called Claverton Manor. This estate was about 1,300 acres, which is a very big piece of land, located just outside the city of Bath. The family then moved to live at Claverton.

William Bassett's Political Career

In November 1640, William Bassett was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the city of Bath. This happened during a time known as the Long Parliament. Being a Member of Parliament meant he helped make important decisions for the country.

Supporting the King

William Bassett was named to a special county committee, which helped manage local affairs. However, he was a strong supporter of King Charles I during the English Civil War. Because he was a Royalist, he was removed from his position in Parliament in 1644. This was a common outcome for those who sided with the King during the war.

William Bassett was married twice. His second wife was Elizabeth Killigrew. She was the daughter of Sir Joseph Killigrew, who lived in London and Cornwall. William Bassett also had a son, also named William, who later became a Member of Parliament for Bath, just like his father.
