William Beauclerc Otway (born around 1819) was an adventurous person who lived in the mid-1800s. He was many things: a soldier, a traveler who moved across land, a shop owner, a rock expert, and a gold miner. He is famous for being the first person to crush quartz rock to get gold in Ballarat, Australia. He also tried to mine for silver in St Arnaud.

Life in the United States

William Otway was born around 1819. When he was about 20, in May 1840, he joined the US Army's Second Dragoons. Dragoons were soldiers who rode horses. He served for five years and then left the army.

Later, he joined the exciting California Gold Rush. This was a time when many people rushed to California to find gold. After this, he settled in Portland, in what was then called the Oregon Territory. There, he became a merchant, which means he owned a shop and sold goods.

William married Rebecca Abrams in San Francisco on July 28, 1852.

Adventures in Australia

In 1853, William and Rebecca Otway sailed to Australia. They arrived in Melbourne on December 27. About three weeks later, they reached Ballarat, a famous gold mining town. They built their home on top of a place called Black Hill.

In November 1854, William Otway led a special dinner. This dinner honored James M. Tarleton, who was a US Consul. The event showed that Americans supported the government. This was important because miners were becoming upset, leading up to the Eureka Rebellion.

Mining Gold in Ballarat

Just three weeks after the Eureka Rebellion, William Otway shared his knowledge with a special group called the Gold Fields Commission of Enquiry. He talked mostly about how mining worked and how it should be managed.

He mentioned that his was the only place in Ballarat that crushed quartz rock. He is often given credit for being the first to use machines to crush quartz for gold in Ballarat. In January 1855, he showed off his new "improved" Chilean mill. This machine was designed to crush rocks. However, his business did not make enough money.

Moving to Steiglitz

After his business in Ballarat, William and Rebecca moved to Steiglitz. Their only son, Willie Dow Otway, was born there on January 16, 1858. There was even a quartz reef (a type of rock formation with minerals) in Steiglitz named after Otway. It was later renamed the Copenhagen.

Silver Mining in St Arnaud

In 1861, Otway started a company called the Alpha Silver Mining Company. This was the second mining company in St Arnaud. It was also the first company there to specifically try to mine for silver.

The company spent a lot of money on land and equipment. However, by 1863, it was clear the mine was not successful. The company's assets (like equipment and land) were sold off in 1864.

No one knows for sure when or where William Otway died. There is a memorial for him and his family in the St Arnaud cemetery. This memorial suggests that his family believed he might have gone to Western Australia.

Legacy

William Otway's name lives on in a few places. Otway Street in Ballarat, Victoria, was named after him. Also, Otway Creek, which is near Mangana in Tasmania, carries his name.
