The William Blacklock House is a very old and special house located at 18 Bull Street in Charleston, South Carolina. It was built in the year 1800 for a rich merchant named William Blacklock. This brick house is a fantastic example of a building style called Adamesque architecture.
Today, the William Blacklock House is owned by the College of Charleston. It is used as the office for the college's alumni, which are people who used to be students there. This house is also a National Historic Landmark, which means it's a very important historical place in the United States.
About the House
The Blacklock House stands on the southern edge of the College of Charleston campus. It is a two-story house made of brick, built on top of a tall brick basement. The roof of the house slopes on all sides, which is called a hipped roof.
The main entrance has a special design. You reach it by climbing two sets of stairs with pretty iron railings. On either side of the front door, there are tall, narrow windows called sidelights. Above the door, there's a beautiful fan-shaped window called a fanlight.
The windows on the sides of the entrance have rounded tops, like an arch. Other windows have flat tops with decorative stones called keystones. Above the main door, there's a larger window with sidelights, and in the roof's peak, there's a big, fan-shaped window called a lunette. The property also has two smaller buildings with a style called Gothic Revival.
History of the House
William Blacklock, a wealthy merchant, bought the land for the house on September 24, 1794. This land was part of a new area being developed called Harleston Village. While the house was likely finished in 1800, William Blacklock was first listed as living there in 1802.
Some people think the famous architect Gabriel Manigault might have designed the house. This is because the house's style is similar to other buildings he designed. William Blacklock was also on a committee that worked with Manigault on another building, a bank that is now City Hall.
The house was carefully repaired and restored in 1937. Later, in 1974, the College of Charleston bought the house. Because of its unique history and architecture, the William Blacklock House was named a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
