William Brisco was born around 1606. His father was John Briscoe from a place called Crofton in Cumberland, England. His mother was Mary Braithwaite. Her father was Sir Thomas Braithwaite.

His Early Life and Learning

When William was 17, in 1623, he started studying at Queen's College, Oxford. This is a famous university. After that, he studied law at Lincoln's Inn in London. In 1634, he became a lawyer, which means he was "called to the bar."

William Brisco's Public Service

William Brisco was very involved in public life. He helped keep the peace in Cumberland as a Justice of the Peace. He did this job for many years, from 1642 to 1662.

High Sheriff of Cumberland

From 1650 to 1651, William Brisco was the High Sheriff of Cumberland. A High Sheriff was a very important official back then. They were in charge of law and order in their county.

Serving in Parliament

William Brisco was elected to the House of Commons of England, which is a part of the English Parliament. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cumberland several times:

  • In 1654, he was elected for the First Protectorate Parliament.
  • In 1656, he was re-elected for the Second Protectorate Parliament.
  • In 1659, he was elected again for the Third Protectorate Parliament.

In 1660, he was elected as an MP for Carlisle. This was for a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament.

William Brisco's Family Life

William Brisco was married twice.

  • His first wife was Susanna Cranfield. They married in 1635 and had one son.
  • His second wife was Susanna Brown. They married before 1643. With Susanna Brown, he had three sons and five daughters.

William Brisco passed away on February 25, 1688.
