William Byron, 4th Baron Byron (born January 4, 1670 – died August 8, 1736) was an important English nobleman and politician. He was a member of the House of Lords and served Prince George of Denmark.
Early Life of William Byron
William Byron was the only son of William Byron, 3rd Baron Byron and Elizabeth Chaworth who lived to be an adult. When his father passed away in 1695, William became the 4th Baron Byron. This meant he inherited his father's title and a seat in the House of Lords.
Family Life and Marriages
Lord Byron was married three times during his life.
His first marriage was to Lady Mary Egerton in 1702 or 1703. Lady Mary was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Bridgewater. They did not have any children together.
His second marriage was to Lady Frances Wilhelmina Bentinck in 1706. She was the daughter of the 1st Earl of Portland. William and Frances had four children, but sadly, all of them passed away when they were very young:
- George Byron (1707–1719)
- William Byron (1709–1709)
- William Henry Byron (1710–1710)
- Frances Byron (1711–1724)
Lady Frances Wilhelmina died in 1712.
Lord Byron married for a third time in 1720 to Frances Berkeley. She was the daughter of the 4th Baron Berkeley of Stratton. William and Frances had six children who lived to adulthood:
- Isabella Byron (1721–1795), who married the 4th Earl of Carlisle.
- William Byron, 5th Baron Byron (1722–1798), who would later become the 5th Baron Byron.
- Vice-Admiral John Byron (1723–1786), a famous naval officer.
- Reverend Richard Byron (1724–1811)
- Charles Byron (1726–1731)
- George Byron (1730–1789)
Later Years and Death
Lord Byron passed away at his home, Newstead Abbey, on August 8, 1736. His son, William Byron, 5th Baron Byron, inherited his title and became the next Baron Byron.
His wife, Frances, later married Sir Thomas Hay in 1741. She was buried in Twickenham, Middlesex, in 1757.
