William Capon (1480–1550) was an English Catholic priest and a very smart scholar.

William Capon: A Life Dedicated to Learning

William Capon was born in 1480 in a place called Salcott, which is near Colchester in Essex. He went to Cambridge University to study. He earned his first degree (B.A.) in 1499. Then, in 1502, when he was 22 years old, he got his Master's degree (M.A.).

In 1516, William became the Master of Jesus College, Cambridge. This meant he was in charge of the college. Later, in 1526, when he was 46, he became the Rector of St. Mary's Church in Southampton. He also became Rector of St. Mary's Church, South Stoneham. In 1546, at 66 years old, William left his job at Jesus College and moved to Southampton.

William Capon and Education in Southampton

When William Capon lived in Southampton, there were special schools called chantry grammar schools. These schools were often linked to churches. They played a big part in providing education in the town.

However, in 1548, a new law called the Chantries Act was passed. This law closed down many of these grammar schools. William Capon was very worried about this. He thought it would harm education in Southampton.

Capon's Legacy: Founding a School

Because he cared so much about learning, William Capon made a plan in his will. A will is a document that says what you want to happen to your money and things after you die. William left £100 to help start and run a new grammar school in Southampton.

William Capon passed away in 1550. His wish came true three years later, in 1553. That's when King Edward VI School, Southampton was officially started. It was founded by a special document called a Royal Charter.

Today, William Capon's name is still remembered at the school. One of the houses at King Edward VI School is named after him.
