William Campbell's Life Story

Early Life and Joining the War

William Charles Campbell was born in Bordeaux, France. His father was from Aberdeen, Scotland, and worked for Lloyds' of London. His mother came from a French noble family. Before joining the army, William worked in the food business.

In 1916, he joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). This was the air force of Britain at the time. He learned to fly at Croydon and earned his pilot's license on November 1, 1916. He trained at the Ruislip military school.

Becoming a World War I Pilot

In March 1917, Campbell was sent to France. On May 1, 1917, he became a pilot with No. 1 Squadron. He flew a type of plane called a Nieuport Scout.

In just two and a half months, from May 14 to July 28, 1917, Campbell achieved 23 aerial victories. This included five enemy observation balloons. This made him the first "balloon buster ace" in the RFC. An "ace" is a pilot who has shot down five or more enemy aircraft. On July 16, he even shot down three enemy planes in only half an hour!

On July 31, 1917, Campbell was wounded in his leg during a fight. His plane was badly damaged, and he had to land. He then returned to England to recover. On September 18, 1917, he became a chief instructor at the School of Military Aeronautics. He was given the rank of acting-major.

Life After the War

After World War I ended, Campbell went back to his work in the food industry. He became a very successful businessman. He was the chairman of several companies, including Sarson's Ltd. and British Vinegars Ltd. He was also the deputy-chairman of Crosse & Blackwell Holdings.

William Campbell loved sports. He was a major owner of the White City Stadium in London. He also became the Chairman of the Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club.

Bar to Military Cross

Soon after, he received a second Military Cross, known as a "Bar" to his first one. This was for his continued bravery and skill. He repeatedly attacked and destroyed enemy aircraft. On one occasion, he destroyed three planes in less than an hour. He also attacked enemy troops from a low height, always showing great disregard for his own safety.

Distinguished Service Order

In September 1917, Campbell was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). This is a very high military honor. He received it for his many brave actions during patrols.
