The William Colburn House is a very old home located at 91 Bennoch Road in Orono, Maine. It was built around 1780 by William Colburn. He was one of the first European settlers to live in this area. This house is special because it is one of the few homes from the 1700s still standing in central Maine. In 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.
Exploring the Colburn House's Past
The William Colburn House sits north of downtown Orono, Maine. You can find it on the west side of Bennoch Road. It is built on a small hill above the road. Long ago, people living here could see the Stillwater River.
What Does the House Look Like?
This house is a 1-1/2 story building. It is built in the traditional Cape style, using a wooden frame. The house has a sloped roof and two brick chimneys inside. Its outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The entire house rests on a strong granite foundation.
The front of the house has a wide doorway in the middle. This special door has windows on both sides. It also has a beautiful fan-shaped window above it. Inside the house, many original features are still there. You can see wide pine floors and wooden panels on the walls. The kitchen has a big fireplace. It even has a metal crane and ovens built right into it.
Who Built the Colburn House?
William Colburn built this house in 1780. He first came to this area in 1774 with his father, Jeremiah. They had to leave in 1775 when the American Revolutionary War started. They returned to Orono in 1780. At that time, they built two houses. One of them was later destroyed by fire.
The William Colburn House is thought to be one of the oldest homes from the 1700s. It is especially unique because it is so far from the coast of Maine. Most very old houses in Maine are found closer to the ocean.
